The project

Title: Reactionary discourse: argumentative repertoires and uses of the past in social media

"This project explores the transnational circulation of topics, motifs, discursive spaces, historical narratives and ideological clichés in ‘reactionary discourse’ between Europe and Latin America. The project proposes that reactionary discourse spreads in the form of shared lexical and argumentative motifs, and is mainly directed at progressive social movements (feminist, environmentalist, anti-racist) perceived as adversaries. The study examines three main areas:

  1. The transnational dissemination of political concepts and the consolidation of a lexical repertoire;
  2. The polarisation and dissemination of these discourses via digital social networks;
  3. The mobilisation of narratives about authoritarian pasts. The aim is to analyse the consolidation of this reactionary discursive formation, its global spread, and its impact on contemporary political divisions."
