Albena Milanova

Albena Milanova, Associate Professor of History, Art History, and Byzantine Archaeology at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", leads or participates in several national and international research projects, including three Franco-Bulgarian projects devoted to the study of Byzantine sculpture from the Black Sea region and to the archaeological excavation of the proto-Byzantine site of Zaldapa (northeastern Bulgaria). She has contributed to the organization of 11 international scientific forums and is the author or co-author of around 60 publications for both scholarly and general audiences.

The project

Title: Study of Early Christian Architectural Sculpture from Recent Excavations at Zaldapa (Bulgaria)

"This project forms part of an effort to make accessible to the international scholarly community a portion of the research results from a little-known site on the Lower Danubian Roman limes—Zaldapa (now in Bulgaria, Dobrich Province). Its rich archaeological potential recently led to the establishment of an international archaeological collaboration (Bulgaria, Canada, France, Albania), which took place between 2018 and 2024. The project was awarded the Clio Prize 2024 for the best French-language project abroad. The present project builds on this initiative, enabling a transition from excavation to an initial analysis of the unearthed material, with a particular focus on the architectural sculpture from the numerous Early Christian churches (six identified to date) discovered on the site."
