Afrânio Mendes Catani

Afrânio Mendes Catani is professor at the Faculty of Education of the University of São Paulo. He is a visiting professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, Duque de Caxias Campus, Master and Doctor in Sociology (USP). He also is a full Lecturer in Education and Researcher at CNPq.

The project

Title: The recepction of Pierre Bourdieu´s work in Brazil

"The aim of the project is to examine the reception, in the Brazilian academic field particularly in the field of education - of the work of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) over some six decades (from the late 1960s to the present day), as well as the mapping of the various mediators and mediators and their brief intellectual trajectories, responsible for this operation, involving (or) readings, translations, prefaces, introductory essays, reviews, production of research using the author's working methodology, institutional exchange courses, seminars, colloquia, supervision of master's and doctoral theses involving similar theoretical concepts and research methods. The material to be handled includes all of Bourdieu's texts published in Brazil, articles published in the most representative national academic journals, based on Qualis CAPES (Coordination for Higher Education Staff Development) in the fields of sociology of education and culture, written by mediators, in addition to the vast bibliography presented in the form of books and book chapters. Some of the review material has already been collected, thanks to previous research financed by the CNPq (Conseil National du Développement Scientifique et Technologique). After systematizing all the material collected and created a detailed typology that takes all this reception into account, involving the work of Bourdieu and his mediators in Brazil, we will have the analytical possibility of considering the impact of this author on Brazilian academic production, as well as writing articles disseminating the results of the research in a variety of publication formats."
