In the late 1990s universities in China started to enlarge the enrollment of students which led to an obvious decrease of gender gap and ethnic gap. The proportion of students of rural origin has been on the increase overall, but decreases in universities which also engage in research. In the urbanization process currently undergone by China, migrants’ children’s access to education has now become the new problems of educational equity.
The author
Yang Dongping is a Chinese scholar for education research, member of the National Education Advisory Committee and professor at Beijing Institute of Technology. He has had a long standing interest in educational equity issues and engaged in different activities in this area. He currently heads the 21st Century Education Research Institute, an influential non-governmental think tank in China.
