Ethnography of Franco-pondicherians jewellery. A production of gender and kinship relations at the core

The jewelleries of Franco-pondicherians are at the core of a social production process of embodied gender relation. They are the material form of emotions, desires, and of the memory of ties in the processual construction of this gendered relation, which find its fulfillment in husband and wife relationship. This conjugal unity is ritually produced by being integrated into several kinship networks through the usages of jewelleries in different rituals in the marriage ceremony. The women’s jewelleries give the possibility and the right to the spouses to organize and manage together the kinship ties among different networks.
 

Priya Ange est doctorante à l’EHESS et travaille sur « La circulation des bijoux féminins dans la parentèle tamoule : Migration, parenté et personne », sous la direction de Mme Véronique Bénéï (prof., directrice de recherche CNRS, EHESS/IIAC-LAIOS). Elle développe une ethnographie multi-située en France et en Inde, dans les réseaux transnationaux de parentèle des Franco-pondichériens, en collaboration avec les orfèvres et les bijoutiers pondichériens. Elle croise une anthropologie de la culture matérielle et immatérielle, des études migratoires, de genre, de parenté et de construction sociale de la personne. La dimension sensorielle, mémorielle et corporelle s’intègre aussi à cette thèse.
 

Prix Louis Dumont-FMSH 2015 grâce auquel j’ai effectué un premier séjour de terrain entre juillet 2015 et février 2016 à Pondicherry pour réaliser une ethnographie des bijoux auprès des Franco-pondichériens en Inde.
