A Figure of Islam in North India, Maulana Abdul Aleem Siddiqui (1892-1954) was able to deploy, from the town of Meerut, transnational strategies for Islamic preaching in the British Empire, particularly in the area the Indian Ocean. His religious trajectory belongs to an Indian muslim tradition which the Maulana was able to renovate through cosmopolitist practices. This proved itself to be useful for the religious nationalism of the first leaders of Pakistan.
