Redistributing value in African mineral value chains

An agenda for research and action
Redistribuer la valeur dans les chaines de valeur des minerais extraits en Afrique
Redistribuer la valeur dans les chaines de valeur des minerais extraits en Afrique
2023 winning project of the "International Networks in HSS - Climate and Environment" programme

The African continent is the primary origination site for the mineral resources needed for the ‘green’ transition. Yet, it is also disproportionality afflicted by the consequences of climate change.

To tackle the limits of policy, industry and scientific responses, this project calls for a new research agenda informed by dialogue between social and natural sciences, among students, researchers, the extractive industry, policy-makers, local communities and civil society. In order to question the global distribution of the dividends of extraction, the project is structured around two forums for discussion. The first, in South-Africa, examines the reconfiguration of the geography of extraction (maritime corridors, offshore and onshore financial flows, reorganization of labor, etc.). The second, in France, purports to leverage a critique of climate (in)justice through the creation of a university-based “clinic” of research and action.
