EU-STRAT

The EU and Eastern Partnership Countries: An Inside-Out Analysis and Strategic Assessment

EU-STRAT is an international research project that studies the relationship between the European Union and the countries of Eastern Europe. Begun in May 2016, the project will expire in April 2019.

The main objective of EU-Strat is to provide an inside-Out Analysis and a Strategic Assessment of the links between the European Union and the Eastern Partnership (EaP) Countries.

Research focus

EU-STRAT will ask two main questions:

1. Why is the EU not in a position to bring peace, prosperity and stability to its eastern neighbors?

2. What can be done to strengthen the transformative power of the EU in its support for the economic and social changes of the six Eastern Partnership countries?

By adopting an internal perspective on the challenges posed by the transformations of the countries of the Eastern Partnership and the European Union, EU-STRAT's mission is to:

  • Develop a conceptual framework for the diversity of social orders in EAP countries to explain the propensity of national actors to embark on the path of change;
  • Understand how bilateral, regional and global interdependencies define the framework and habits of national actors in EAP countries;
  • Décentrer l'Union Européenne en étudiant le rôle des Etats membres et autres acteurs extérieurs actifs dans la région ;
  • Evaluate the impact of Association Agreements and alternative European instruments, including scientific cooperation, in supporting the changes in EAP countries;
  • Analyze the normative discourse used by the EU and Russia to favor its hold on their common neighborhood;
  • Make recommendations to strengthen the EU's capacity to support change in EAP countries by simulating different scenarios of development trajectory.
