Launching of the new ‘Truchements’ collection published by the Société d'ethnologie de Nanterre, with a presentation in words and music of its first title, ‘Passeurs de mémoire’, by Bernard Lortat-Jacob. *Event in french*

‘Truchements’ is the title of the new collection published by the Société d'ethnologie de Nanterre, dedicated to an anthropology of intermediaries, those people who are indispensable to researchers in the human and social sciences and whose impact on the construction of anthropological knowledge is not sufficiently measured.

Presented by its two co-directors and discussed by anthropologists in the light of their experience and requirements, the collection will be put to the test in the evening with Bernard Lortat Jacob's book, Passeurs de mémoire.

Speakers
  • A. Monod Becquelin and Caroline Cunill, the two co-directors of the collection
  • Anthropologists: P. Déléage, Ph. Erikson, C. Riverti, V. Gherman, T. Zimmermann, S. Mejdoub, V. Stoichita, M. Chemillier.
The book

Passeurs de mémoire
Bernard Lortat-Jacob

Passeurs de mémoire answers an enigma in the field: these melodies, these cries played or whistled, these songs from the land of Oach, in Romania, multiply their melodic expressions and form a repertoire that musicians and listeners ‘from there’ identify without difficulty, while they are impossible to transcribe by musicologists and the most experienced musicians. How can they be recognised and passed on? Bernard Lortat-Jacob tells the story of how, through the fervour, reflection and friendship of the musicians he meets - his intermediaries - he shares in this chain of transmission and meaning. By immersing his whole body in the indescribable sounds, the author shows that beyond the flesh-and-blood performers, music laughs at the crowd of mediators and exposes itself as a primary sensory medium, enchanting, with its share of mystery.

In this autobiographical account, life's accidents - encounters, investigations, deaths - weave a network of relationships and communications in which musical knowledge is passed on from intermediary to intermediary, from enthusiast to enthusiast. A comprehensive lesson in music.
