On the occasion of the publication of Sciences sociales par temps de crise, to be published on November 16 at the Éditions du Collège de France, the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme is organizing an evening presentation of the book.

This Livres en dialogue session will bring together the book's author, Didier Fassin, and the journalist Sonya Faure.

After the discussion, you will have the opportunity to ask our guest any questions you may have. The meeting will be followed by a moment of conviviality.

Our guests

Didier Fassin is an anthropologist, sociologist and physician. He holds the chair of Moral Issues and Political Stakes in Contemporary Societies at the Collège de France, and also teaches at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.

Sonya Faure is a journalist and writer.

The book

Ecological, health, energy, economic, social, humanitarian, democratic: crises are an essential part of the contemporary world. If the social sciences can help us understand and resolve them, their role is also to question the language of crisis, to analyze the gap or convergence between reality and its representation: naming or silencing a crisis, exaggerating or minimizing it, are all processes that generate affects, temporalities and omissions with major consequences that critical thinking must decipher.

Drawing both on the life trajectories of famous figures from the human sciences and on research conducted around eloquent facts of the present, this inaugural lesson, which is addressed to every citizen, lays the groundwork for a vast ethical and political reflection, the necessity of which our times continue to demonstrate.

Heard in the media

The emergency dimension very often avoids asking structural questions, because critical situations are not simply those of a moment, but come from the years, or even decades, that have provoked them.

As soon as this urgency - which goes hand in hand with a whole range of emotions, and the primary emotion in times of crisis is fear - seems to call for decisions or states of exception, it can become a threat to democratic regimes.

Didier Fassin interviewed by Quentin Lafay in "Les matins du samedi", France Culture, March 25, 2023.
