Recognising informal learning through open badges
The FMSH is hosting a conference and debate dedicated to issue no. 66 of the journal Les Cahiers de l'action, organised by the National Institute for Youth and Popular Education.
The event will bring together contributors to the publication, entitled “Recognising informal learning through open badges”.
This issue of Cahiers de l'action explores changes in the ways in which learning and skills are recognised in educational, professional and voluntary contexts. It shows how a model of open recognition is emerging, based on relationships, lived experiences and collective dynamics, as opposed to a more traditional approach to skills validation.
In a European landscape where the boundaries between formal, non-formal and informal learning are constantly being redefined, the recognition of skills is a major democratic issue. From the popularisation of open badges by the Mozilla Foundation (2012) to the Open Recognition Manifesto (2025), an international ecosystem has been seeking to move beyond the logic of normative validation in order to build ‘open recognition’.
This issue of *Cahiers de l’action* examines the mechanisms that enable this form of recognition to emerge within communities. The articles brought together in this special issue propose a shift in perspective by contrasting the recognition of skills (which prioritises the standardisation and decontextualisation of knowledge) with the recognition of practices, understood as situated activities that can be shared.
INJEP, a national agency within the Ministry of National Education and Youth, is a think tank that generates knowledge and serves as a centre of resources and expertise on youth issues and the policies relating to them.
