Puissance des lieux présence des morts
How can a society evolve while carrying the memory of a genocide?

The Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme is organising an evening presentation of the book Puissance des lieux, présence des morts, published on 20 March 2025 by the Société d'ethnologie.

This session of Livres en dialogue will welcome author Anne Yvonne Guillou, in conversation with a guest who will offer a complementary and stimulating perspective on the book.

At the end of the event, you will have the opportunity to ask our guests any questions you may have.

About the book

How can a society rebuild itself after genocide? What marks does this violence leave in the collective and individual memory? What place do these ‘unburied dead’ occupy in the lives of local populations? The Western media's interpretation of the genocide perpetrated by the Khmer Rouge between 1975 and 1979 stems from a certain view of the suffering of others, which is very different from how Cambodians themselves express it. Drawing on extensive ethnographic research, the author seeks to take into account their feelings, experiences and uniqueness, thanks to a familiarity built up over several decades.
