The Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme is hosting an evening presentation of the book La Mouridiyya en marche. Islam, migration et implantations, to be published on 17 April 2025 in the ‘Afrique(s)’ series by Éditions de la MSH.

The event will feature a discussion between the author, Cheikh Anta Babou, and journalist Charlotte Recoquillon, author of Harlem. Une histoire de la gentrification (Éditions de la MSH).

Following the discussion, there will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions.

About the book

The first study in French on the Mouride Sufi community in Senegal. Drawing on a wide range of oral sources and archives collected in five countries, La Mouridiyya en marche is a key work for understanding the interplay between spirituality, culture, and globalisation. Cheikh Anta Babou, a historian specialising in Muslim communities in West Africa and the new African diaspora, has been teaching African history at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia since 2002.

Speakers

Cheikh Anta Babou is a historian specialising in Muslim communities in West Africa and the new African diaspora. He studied at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar and Michigan State University. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of African History and the Journal of West African History. Since 2002, he has been teaching African history at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

Charlotte Recoquillon is a geographer, doctor of geopolitics, and a specialist in the United States. Her research focuses on police violence, racism, and the Black Lives Matter movement. A lecturer at Sciences Po, she is the author of Harlem. Une histoire de la gentrification (Harlem: A History of Gentrification), published by Éditions de la MSH.
