Breno Bringel

Directeur d’études associé au Collège d’études Mondiales au sein de l'Initiative Mouvements sociaux à l'âge global 

Breno Bringel is Doctor of Political Sciences at Complutense University of Madrid, where he also lectures. He has been a visiting professor at universities in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Portugal, Spain, France, Switzerland and the UK. Currently, he is a researcher and professor at the Instituto de Estudos Sociais e Políticos (Institute of Social and Political Studies) at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (IESP-UERJ). He currently holds the post of Director for Scientific Dissemination at the institute. 

With José Maurício Domingues, he co-directed NETSAL (Núcleo de Estudios Teoría Social y América Latina).  He is a researcher at CNPq (Brazil's National Council for Scientific and Technological Development ). He was the recipient of the “Joven Cientista de Nuestro Estado” (Young scientist) award from the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ; Research Support Foundation of the State of Rio de Janeiro). He is the chief editor of the journal DADOS – Revista de Ciencias Sociales. Created in 1966, it is one of the most highly regarded Brazilian journals in the political and social sciences. He is also joint editor, with Geoffrey Pleyers, of openMovements, a publication by openDemocracy.

He actively participates in a number of groups on the study of social movements and social theory. He coordinated the working group on social theory of the Asociación Latinoamericana de Sociología (Latin American Association of Sociology) and is currently a member of the Board of the Research Committee on Social Classes and Social Movements (RC-47, International Sociological Association). He also coordinates the working group on social movements (Sociedade Brasileira de Sociologia; Brazilian sociological society) and the group on critical theories, Latin America and Epistemologies of the South (Institut de recherche sur le syndicalisme et les mouvements sociaux; Research institute on trade unionism and social movements).

During his time in Paris as Director of Studies with the Collège d’études Mondiales, he developed a project concerning the public and global sociology of social movements
