Published for the first time in French, this reference book attempts to give the reader a complete picture of African cities, from their origins to the present day. It focuses on the cities of the entire continent, not just sub-Saharan Africa, over a broad period from antiquity to the present day. The author relies on precise historical facts, but also rich descriptions from several sources and various illustrations. He addresses many issues, from why urban life emerged to how African cities today are coping. Instead of seeing cities as alien to real Africa, it considers them as an inherent part of indigenous, colonial, and then postcolonial Africa, and emphasizes how the future of African society and culture is likely to be played out largely in cities. The different positions and debates of scholars on African cities are also given special attention.
