Geopolitics and economic growth: encounters between Europe and Asia, 16th-19th century

The 8th EurasiaTrajeco International Conference « Geopolitics and Economic Growth : Space, Frontiers, Encounters, (Europe and Asia, 16th-19th Century) » will be held in Naples (Università L’Orientale) under the auspices of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, the Università Orientale, the Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme, and the École des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. Since 2013, seven international meetings have taken place in Paris, Florence, Lisbon, Seville and Jerusalem.

These conferences are part of a long-term cooperation between researchers from Europe, East Asia Turkey and Israel entitled The Globalisation’s origins and the Great Divergence: Trading Networks and the Trajectory of Economic Institutions, Europe-Asia, 1500-2000. More generally, the aim of this conference is to address the issue of interconnected European-Asian history. The international nature of the panels selected will combine European and Asian expertise, to reflect the diversity of the different economic, political and cultural contexts studied. The conference will bring together senior researchers, young scholars and doctoral students.

The planned conference will mobilise various disciplines (history, historical geography, legal studies, anthropology economic history and business history) and place a particular emphasis on the comparative dimension. This conference will explore the following issues:

1. Geopolitics: sovereignties and conflicts
2. Institutions and economic growth
3. Encounters: international circulation of people and texts in a longue durée perspective
