Aesthetic Moments in Health - An Atlas

Renewing experiences and representations of health

Award-winning project 2024 "Arts & SHS" call

Art and its practice in the field of care are often perceived as therapeutic tools. In a time when both museums and practitioners endorse this usage—whose benefits are evident and often indisputable—this research and creation project aims to bring to light an overlooked aspect that art, as an auxiliary, may obscure: the aesthetic dimension of care itself. Originating from a discussion among researchers with interdisciplinary skills, who are both theorists and practitioners, caregivers and/or creators, this project seeks to highlight moments that often remain in the realm of the unspeakable, yet, due to their intensity, constitute aesthetic experiences in the Deweyan sense of the term. Our working hypothesis is that identifying, designating, and accumulating these moments will renew our experiences and representations of health, thus providing a novel contribution to debates in the associated human and social sciences. We wish to create an atlas, a compilation of these moments located in space and time, to develop a sensitive and scientific geography. This inventory will take the form of four sound compositions, each of which will be launched through events that bring together the academic, artistic, and caregiving communities.
