Weaving Social Ties in a Changing World: The "Considerations" System (akasʉose) and Alliance Relations among the Tuyuka of North-West Amazonia

Discover the sixth session of the 2025–2026 Americanist Anthropology seminar: "Weaving Social Ties in a Changing World: The “Considerations” System (akasʉose) and Alliance Relations among the Tuyuka of North-West Amazonia"

"This presentation will provide an opportunity to reflect on Native American kinship, and more specifically that of the Tuyuka, a people of the northwestern Amazon, based on what can be defined as their system of "considerations": a conceptual and relational system that encompasses kinship terminology, onomastics, the system of attitudes, as well as the rules of alliance and precedence between blood relatives and in-laws. After defining this system and identifying how it expresses a particular vision of kinship relations, we will examine specific cases of marriages to determine to what extent these considerations are, from the Tuyuka’s perspective, undergoing transformation, and in this sense also reflect the changes affecting the world of Amerindian kinship and social relations."
