Sharing Power: Communalization as a Political Ideal

Presentation of a research project as part of the "Jeudis de la Maison Suger", a residents' research seminar.

This session will welcome Geoffrey Grandjean for a presentation on the question: “What if the state were no longer the only way to organize our collective lives?” He invites us to explore the concept of communalization, an alternative approach to political organization that rethinks power from the perspective of local communities and seeks to build a shared world beyond fixed borders. Drawing on a long-term historical analysis of the evolution of European political systems, he argues that societal transformation does not necessarily require abrupt revolution. Instead, meaningful change can emerge through the development of new ways of living together and exercising collective agency. This seminar is an invitation to envision a more egalitarian and freer future grounded in solidarity.

• Goeffrey Grandjean is Full Professor at the University of Liège, Faculty of Law, Political Science and Criminology. He is also an Associate Researcher at the Sciences Po Paris Law School and Chief Executive Officer of the Presses Universitaires de Liège.
