"Perspectives on Ideology: From Discursive Typification to the Politicization of the Gaze" - Seminar in french

Discover the first session of the 2026-2027 International Seminar of Semiotics in Paris: "Perspectives on Ideology: From Discursive Typification to the Politicization of the Gaze".

Following our previous work on generative AI models and processes of typification (Between Automatism and the Automation of Language Practices: Towards a New Semiotics of the Stereotype), this year’s seminar shifts the focus of inquiry. Rather than concentrating solely on the reduction of cultural complexity through stereotypes, it seeks to explore the broader question of ideology.

Ideology cannot be reduced to a set of explicit doctrines. Rather, it constitutes a constellation of values, an axiology, that shapes our judgments and practices, often in implicit or naturalized ways. Because “ideology is always that of others,” it tends to become invisible when it informs our own enunciative positions and evaluative frameworks.

This year, particular attention will be devoted to:

  • Analyzing the processes through which ideologies are formed, circulated, and transformed within discourse and social practices
  • Examining the ways in which values become naturalized and shape individual and collective judgments
  • Investigating the relationships between ideology, enunciation, forms of life, and power relations
  • Fostering dialogue between semiotic approaches and those of linguistic anthropology, critical discourse analysis, and other disciplines within the humanities and social sciences;
  • Exploring contemporary forms of ideological mediation through digital technologies, online platforms, and artificial intelligence
  • Contributing to a collective reflection on the epistemological, cultural, and political issues involved in the production of knowledge and the interpretation of social phenomena.
