A meeting-debate organised as part of the commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Revolution of 25 April 1974.

The Gulbenkian Library and the FMSH welcome Margarida Calafate Ribeiro, from the Centre for Social Studies (CES) at the University of Coimbra, for a debate on Le corps des autres et le 25 avril 1974 - La restitution de la mémoire et les générations d'après.

This meeting, part of the Cycle of Seminars and International Colloquium Le corps en ses mouvements, résistances, dissidences et protestations échos de l'avril portugais, is organised by Graça Dos Santos of the Centre de recherches interdisciplinaires sur le monde lusophone (CRILUS - Études Romanes) at the University of Paris Nanterre.

This work is based on the analysis of a number of literary and visual narratives that tell us about the transition from a ‘people of the empire’, materialised in their bodies and subjectivities, to a ‘post-colonial people’ following the revolution of 25 April 1974, which marked the end of Salazar's dictatorship, the end of the colonial war and the start of the decolonisation of Portugal's former African colonies with the Great Return movement.

What remains today of this rupture in the national imagination? What are the legacies? What are the cover-ups? In other words, what have we decided to forget and what have we agreed to remember?
