The Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme is pleased to invite you to a discussion on the book Mémoires en conflit. Points de fuite de l’Holocauste et du colonialisme by Natan Sznaider, to be published in April in the Bibliothèque allemande collection by Éditions de la MSH.

On this occasion, Natan Sznaider, Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Tel Aviv-Yaffo Academic College, will engage in a dialogue with René Aguigah, Head of the Literature, Philosophy and Religion Department at Deutschlandfunk Kultur since 2019. The discussion, which will be held in English, will explore the issues raised in the book and contemporary debates on the memory of the past.

About the book

In this powerful essay, Natan Sznaider examines how memories of the Holocaust and colonialism coexist and evolve in a globalized world. Rather than opposing universal memory and singular experiences, he highlights contemporary tensions and debates on historical justice, the recognition of suffering, and the political use of the past.

Through a critical and nuanced approach, he explores the conflicts of memory that permeate our societies and examines how traumatic legacies are shaped, transmitted, and sometimes instrumentalized. Engaging with thinkers such as Karl Mannheim, Hannah Arendt, Frantz Fanon, and Edward Said, he offers an in-depth analysis of memory dynamics and their impact on contemporary issues.

This work is the French translation of the book originally published in 2022 by Hanser. It was translated by Pierre Rusch as part of the Franco-German translation programme.
