What will the city of the future be like?

To mark its publication on 22 May 2025, the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme will be hosting a presentation of La ville du futur (Éditions du Collège de France), featuring authors Patrick Boucheron and Philippe Sansonetti.

A follow-up to the transdisciplinary symposium ‘La ville du futur’ held in 2024 at the Collège de France, the book outlines the contours of an urban habitat faced with the risks induced by human concentration.

At the end of the meeting, you will have the opportunity to ask our guests any questions you may have.

About the book

How did our ancestors see their city of the future? How do our contemporaries imagine it? How can we ensure the transformation and resilience of existing cities? How can we design and guarantee the sustainability of new towns and cities? How can we meet the need for cities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while adapting to climate change? How can urban mobility evolve in this context? And finally, how can we build a city that welcomes everyone?

If the city of the future is not to be a utopian dream of the past, we - from politicians to citizens - must take up these questions, which are just as many challenges to be met.

This book lays the foundations for this collective reflection by looking at urban space from the angles of history, biodiversity, health, materials and organisation.
