On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme will be opening the doors of its research residence Maison Suger.

Conceived in 1985 by Fernand Braudel and Clemens Heller – founders and first trustees of the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme – to compensate the lack of accommodation facilities for foreign researchers invited to Paris, the research residence Maison Suger hosts nearly 200 researchers from around the world each year.

A former private mansion acquired by the Ministry of Education in 1967, the building was made available to the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme in 1987 to be converted into a research residence. The restoration and renovation work, carried out by the architect Antoine Grumbach while respecting the original architectural forms of the building, was made possible thanks to the exceptional support of public and private funds, institutions, patrons and donors from France and abroad.

Since its inauguration in 1990, the Maison Suger, a space for interdisciplinary exchange and networking, has been a symbol of international scientific cooperation.

Join us on Friday 20 September 2024, from 10am to 6pm, to discover the history and activities of this house dedicated to scholars in the humanities and social sciences. The day will conclude with the unveiling of Maison Suger commemorative plaque and the Portrait of Clemens Heller, a work by the painter Jean Pellotier, which the family donated to the FMSH in June 2024.
