A meeting based on the book “En deçà du bien et du mal. Morals in literature from the Renaissance to the contemporary age”.

The Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme is organising an evening event to present the book En deçà du bien et du mal, on the occasion of its publication by Éditions Hermann.

The book is one of the outcomes of the “Fiction and the ethical turn” project, winner of the 2022 FMSH Arts & SHS program.

The meeting will take place in the presence of the book's authors and, more generally, the program's winning team.

The speakers
  • Barbara Carnevali, Director of Studies, Chair of Social Aesthetics, EHESS
  • Emiliano Cavaliere, PhD student, EHESS; ATER, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris 3
  • Katie Ebner-Landy, Junior Fellow, Society of Fellows, Harvard University
  • Doriane Molay, Contract PhD student, EHESS

The book En deçà du bien et du mal

In 2007, Pierre Jourde could write without fear of contradiction that “as far as contemporary literature is concerned, talking about good and evil seems completely obsolete”. As current events illustrate, this kind of position is no longer easily defensible today.

The aim of this book, supported by the FMSH Arts & SHS program, is to examine the many links and gaps between literature and ethics, based on specific case studies that reveal the complexity of the moral context in which they emerged, from Machiavelli's poetics to British writer Rachel Cusk's “interview form”, via Swift's satire, Stendhal's irony and Leonard Woolf's emotivism.

This collective volume, presented at Le Comptoir of the Foundation on the occasion of its release, would thus like to provoke reflection whenever we hear words such as censorship, sensitivity readers or art autonomy, as well as when we consider the very concept of representation as being in a state of crisis.
