Dieux maudits
An overview of the history of blasphemy from Antiquity to the present day, via the Middle Ages and the Enlightenment.

The Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme and the Éditions de la MSH invite you to an evening presentation of the book Dieux maudits. L'histoire du blasphème, to be published on 26 September 2024 in the "Bibliothèque allemande" collection.

This session will bring together the author of the book, Gerd Schwerhoff, and his foreword, Olivier Christin, who will explain why, for more than two thousand years, people have insulted God, prophets or saints, and why these words and actions unleash passions. He shows us the changing face of blasphemy through the ages, from the swearing peasants of the Middle Ages through Voltaire's fight against the crime of blasphemy to today's tensions over secularism.

Speakers
  • Gerd Schwerhoff, author of the book, is Professor of Early Modern History at the Technical University of Dresden.
  • Olivier Christin wrote the preface for the French edition. He is Professor of Modern History at the University of Neuchâtel and Director of Studies at the École Pratique des Hautes Études (Ve section).
The book Dieux maudits. L'histoire du blasphème

The worldwide outrage caused by the cartoons of Mohammed and the terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo in 2015 made it clear: blasphemy is not a relic of the Inquisition, it is more relevant today than it was a hundred years ago. Gerd Schwerhoff offers a broad history of blasphemy from Antiquity to the present day, via the Middle Ages and the Enlightenment. He explains why, for over two thousand years, people have insulted God, prophets and saints, and why these words and deeds unleash passions. He shows us the changing face of blasphemy through the ages, from the swearing peasants of the Middle Ages to the current tensions surrounding secularism, via Voltaire's fight against the crime of blasphemy.
