On the occasion of the publication of Cartes et fictions (XVIe-XVIIIe siècle) by Roger Chartier, on the 4th of April in the Éditions du Collège de France "Faire savoir" collection, the Fondation Maison des sciences de l'homme is organising an evening to present the book.

This Livres en dialogue session will bring together the author Roger Chartier and Florent Georgesco, journalist at Le Monde des livres.

The purpose of this essay is not to follow the proliferation of maps after Tolkien, both in the epic fantasy genre and in books for young people. Such a path would lead us to Harry Potter and Game of Thrones. The path proposed here is the opposite. It aims to draw up a historical genealogy of the presence of maps in fiction. [...] All the maps selected in this survey accompany novels, satires, utopias or dystopias, even if, or rather, especially if these fables belong to genres supposed to tell the real, such as travel stories.

Roger Chartier

After the discussion, you will have the opportunity to ask our guest any questions you may have. The meeting will be followed by a moment of conviviality.

The "Faire savoir" collection offers works that are the result of research carried out in various forms at the Collège de France. It aims to contribute to the "transmission of knowledge in the making", in accordance with the institution's motto, whatever the discipline or subject. Some of the books are the result of extremely recent, unpublished work, while others are based on older, unpublished studies that are preserved in the archives of the Collège de France.
