CANCELLED | Le nageur Alfred Nakache, champion olympique et rescapé d’Auschwitz
The Maison Suger invites you to a talk around the book "Le nageur", with the author Pierre Assouline, organised by the Mémorial des martyrs de la Déportation.
Alfred Nakache was a top-level swimmer and world record holder, winning gold at the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 and London in 1948. He was also a deportee, a survivor of Auschwitz, Buchenwald and the Marches of Death. With the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games just around the corner, the memorial to the martyrs of the Deportation is inviting journalist and writer Pierre Assouline to talk about his true-life novel, Le nageur (Gallimard), which describes a destiny that is all about resilience and surpassing oneself.
Pierre Assouline is a journalist and writer. He is the author of around thirty books, biographies and novels. He is also a columnist for L'Histoire and L'Express, writes the daily blog "La République des livres", teaches at Sciences Po and is a member of the Académie Goncourt.

Dénoncé par un rival comme juif et comme résistant à la Gestapo toulousaine, il fut déporté avec sa jeune femme, Paule, et leur petite Annie. D’Auschwitz à Buchenwald en passant par la marche de la mort, il survécut grâce à une volonté et une constitution athlétique hors du commun. Mais à quel prix ?
