Conference of the research Initiative Social Movements in the Global Age

How did Brazil go from demonstrations that demanded a deepening of democracy in 2013 to an ample electoral victory of far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro in 2018? Such rapid evolution has surprised all analysts. This conference will emphasize that it nevertheless finds some of its roots in medium and long-term developments in Brazil. Cristiana Losekann analyze recent developments in the light of the quest for political authenticity in Brazil. Geoffrey Pleyers will return to the rise of reactionary movements and the consequences of religious changes that have their roots in the 1980s.

Speakers

Cristiana Losekann, Professor at Federal de Espirito Santo University (Brésil)

Geoffrey Pleyers, FNRS/Université de Louvain & Collège d’études mondiales
