As part of its series of events, the Bibliothèque Gulbenkian is hosting a presentation of the book António Sardinha (1887-1925) et la contre-révolution ibérique. Le penseur et ses héritages (Peter Lang, 2024), by its author George Gomes, with the participation of Olivier Dard.

About the book

António Sardinha, master of the Portuguese traditionalist monarchist movement of Lusitanian Integralism, as well as a leading polemicist of the Portuguese radical right in the early twentieth century, is the subject of this book. Using numerous printed sources and private archives, the author offers a critical study of the main ideas to be found in Sardinha's political work, placing them in context, before examining his thoughts on a possible counter-revolutionary alliance between Portugal and Spain, or even between Ibero-America and Spain. Finally, the book takes stock of the thinker's intellectual influence and legacy, demonstrating how, through young politicians such as Pedro Teotónio Pereira and Marcello Caetano, his work had a profound impact on the Salazar dictatorship in Portugal. It also highlights the impact of ‘Hispanism’ abroad, with Ramiro de Maeztu an avid reader in Spain and Gilberto Freyre an admirer in Brazil.
