Of what are revolutions the name? Of what impulse, of what desire of humanity are they the mark? In this considerable sum, Yadh Ben Achour, a Tunisian jurist and academic, examines the phenomenon of revolution, from its conceptualization to its implementation. Using numerous examples, the author develops his theory: revolutions are driven by an ethic.

If these are multiple - democratic, independence, linked or not to religions -, they are also universal. Dealing with well-known examples such as the French Revolution or the American, Russian or Chinese, Polish or Iranian revolutions, Yadh Ben Achour also brings to the forefront the African, Arab and Islamic revolutions.

This original approach gives pride of place to examples that are less well known to the French public. From Ethiopia to Sudan, via Egypt, South Africa, Guinea, Mali and Burkina Faso, this book takes us to the frantic rhythm of the history of revolutions, everywhere, at all times.

The author

Yadh Ben Achour was born on June 1, 1945 in La Marsa, in a family of scholars from the historical University of Zaytouna in Tunis. He studied law between 1964 and 1969 in Tunis, then in Paris. In 1974, he obtained his doctorate in public law under the supervision of Professor Georges Burdeau. Since then, he has pursued an academic career and held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Legal Sciences at the University of Carthage between 1993 and 1999. During his academic career, he specialized in domestic and international public law and Islamic political theory. Appointed in 1988 as a member of the Tunisian Constitutional Council, he resigned in 1992 to protest against the authorities' attempt to liquidate the Tunisian League for Human Rights, through a reform of the law on associations. After the Revolution, he was appointed President of the High Authority for the Achievement of the Objectives of the Revolution, whose main mission was to liberalize the political system and prepare for the elections to the National Constituent Assembly. He is currently a member of the Tunisian Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts.
