Venus, Flora, Hebe or Diana - so many ancient divinities who lent, from the end of the seventeenth century in France, their attributes and their steamy costumes, often affriant, to many women of the court aristocracy, the rising bourgeoisie and the nobility of dress. The social elite was then painted in mythological or historical costumes by famous artists such as Nicolas de Largillierre, Hyacinthe Rigaud, François de Troy, Jean-Marc Nattier or Jean Raoux.
