Scott Straus

Biographie

Scott Straus est professeur et président associé au Département de science politique et professeur d'études internationales de l'université de Winsconsin-Madison. Spécialiste de la violence, des droits de l'homme et de la politique africaine, il est membre du Panel International sur la Sortie de la Violence et co-directeur de la revue Violence: An international journal. Ses livres les plus récents sont Fundamentals of Genocide and Mass Atrocity Prevention (US Holocuast Memorial Museum, 2016) et Making and Unmaking Nations: War, Leadership, and Genocide in Modern Africa (Cornell, 2015), qui a remporté les prix de l'American Political Science Association et de l'Association des études internationales. Son livre de 2006 sur le génocide rwandais, The Order of Genocide: Race, Power, and War in Rwanda (Cornell University Press), a également remporté plusieurs prix, dont le meilleur livre de science politique de 2006 de l'Association of American Publishers. Il a également coédité, avec Lars Waldorf, Remaking Rwanda: State-Building and Human Rights in Rwanda (UW Press, 2011) et, avec Steve Stern, The Human Rights Paradox: Universality and Its Discontents (UW Press, 2014).

Scott Straus a également coécrit, avec David Leonard, Africa’s Stalled Development: International Causes and Cures (Lynne Rienner, 2003) et, avec Robert Lyons, Intimate Enemy: Voices and Images of the Rwandan Genocide (Zone / MIT, 2006). Il a publié des articles dans l'American Journal of Political Science, World Politics, Politics and Society, Foreign Affairs, Perspectives on Politics, African Affairs, Terrorism and Political Violence, Genocide Studies and Prevention, The Journal of Genocide Research et d'autres revues; il a traduit Les Grands Lacs d'Afrique: deux mille ans d'histoire (Zone 2003); et il a reçu des bourses de la Fondation Harry Frank Guggenheim, de la Fondation Andrew Mellon, de la National Science Foundation, du Social Science Research Council et du United States Institute of Peace. En 2009, Straus a reçu le William Kiekhofer Distinguished Teaching Award et en 2011, il a été nommé boursier Winnick au Committee on Conscience du U.S.Holocaust Memorial Museum. Avant sa carrière universitaire, Straus était un journaliste indépendant en Afrique.
