The studies gathered in this volume echo the rediscovery of Siegfried Kracauer's manuscript Totalitarian Propaganda (1937-1938). Their intention is twofold, philological and political. On the one hand, they shed light on an important chapter of "Critical Theory" (the "Frankfurt School"): the debate on mass culture and propaganda that developed among German exiles at the turn of the 1930s and 1940s. On the other hand, they seize the impulses to elaborate a critical theory of propaganda that is relevant to the present: The themes debated between the protagonists of the late 1930s, such as the authoritarian drift of liberalism, mass manipulation, and the media construction of reality, have lost none of their topicality.
