Lost in translation
This research project focuses on the place of Khmer intermediaries and mediators in charge of translation in the aid sector in Cambodia. A crucial pivot in the establishment of contemporary philanthropy, these actors are very often invisible, sometimes to the benefit of the aid workers themselves or the so-called beneficiary populations. A study of their status and role sheds light on the issues surrounding translation in the humanitarian sector and shows how their individual careers have been directly influenced by the different waves of development that the country has undergone.
Sarah Kerboas
arah Kerboas is a PhD student in anthropology at LISST-CAS (Toulouse), CASE (Paris). She works under the supervision of Catherine SCHEER and Jérôme Courduriès. Her research focuses on translation and the role of interpreters in the humanitarian sector in Cambodia. Through this theme, she examines the more global phenomenon of development and how its dynamics can significantly alter certain life paths, which oscillate between acceptance and resistance.
