FMSH is a private law foundation recognised as being of public interest. Its purpose is to promote, both nationally and internationally, the study of the social sciences and humanities, and their relations with other fields of knowledge.

Under its current Articles of Association, its activities include:

  • Hosting research programmes with a strong interdisciplinary and international dimension;
  • Developing collective work tools designed to support and contribute to scientific production in the social sciences and humanities;
  • Disseminating knowledge and promoting research using all the tools, skills and resources that it has gathered by fostering an interdisciplinary approach and an international outlook, and fully engaging in the digital age;
  • Contributing to the growing international reach of France's socials ciences and humanities sector;
  • Hosting sheltered foundations that have a link with its corporate purpose.

Its governance structure consists of fourbodies:

  • A Supervisory Board composed of 15 members;
  • An International Scientific Board composed of at least 11 members, which issues an opinion on the scientific programmes hosted by the foundation, and presents scientific assessment reports to the Supervisory Board;
  • An Executive Board composed of three to five members appointed by the Supervisory Board (up to three of whom may be paid as corporate officers in accordance with the upper limit stipulated in the legislation1). The Executive Board — a collegial body — is chaired by one of its members, appointed after approval by the Minister(s) for Higher Education and Research; it has specific delegations from the Supervisory Board. The Executive Board is responsible for overseeing the foundation and implementing the strategic decisions taken by the Supervisory Board on the proposal of the Executive Board chair. The term of office of the Executive Board members is four years, renewable once.
  • An Ethics Committee, which is an independent advisory body composed of 5 members appointed by the Supervisory Board.
Recruitment process

A position of vice-chair is vacant within the Executive Board elected on June 27th, 2023 and must be filled during the Supervisory Board of the May 15th, 2024.

This vice-chair is specifically dedicated to overseeing the publishing strategy, book dissemination, and distribution of books entrusted to the FMSH. He or she will thus be required to collaborate with the directors of the dedicated services.

The candidate for Vice-Chair of the Executive Board shall adress a curriculum vitae, a cover letter, and a declaration of absence of conflict of interest before Friday, May 3, 2024 at 12 PM (compulsory deadline).

He or she will be interviewed on May 15h, 2024 by the Supervisory Board.

  • a letter of up to 10,000 characters illustrating how the scientific and/or management skills of the vice-chairmanship candidate strengthen or complement the profile of the Executive Board elected on June 27th, 2023. In this regard, it is recommended, upon request from the candidate, to engage in discussions with the Chairman of the Executive Board of the FMSH prior to submitting their candidacy

1. In accordance with the provisions of Article 261, 7-1° d of the French General Tax Code, the FMSH may pay three of its directors. The terms and amount of their remuneration are defined in the deed of appointment voted by the Supervisory Board, after the french Government Commissioner has given his or her assent. These amounts follow changes in the tax provisions, in particular those relating to authorised remuneration limits. Finally, the directors of the foundation are subject to the regulations regarding corporate officers, whose rights and obligations may engage their personal, civil and criminal liability, Art. 1984-1992 of the french Civil Code.
