[Closed] Call for projects | Philanthropy and Education

New Deadline: June 26th, 2020

The Research and Prospective Pole of the Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme (FMSH), supports the creation of projects dedicated to innovative themes in the humanities and social sciences (SHS).

This call for projects is a new feature of one of the main missions of the FMSH, which is to provide scientific and material support to research projects that are in the early stages of their development and can use the support of the FMSH to develop further their scientific content, methodology, and research networks.

From this perspective, the Research and Prospective pole also offers laureates technical support so that, at the end of the period, they can set up larger projects, particularly with the ANR or major European research programs.

Theme: Philanthropy and Education

At a time when education is increasingly recognized as an essential motor of economic growth and part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, when knowledge societies demand new skills, the context in which education systems evolve remains precarious in many places around the world. At the same time, the number and variety of philanthropic organizations continue to grow around the world, and their role in the development of education becomes more and more important. Given this situation, it is urgent to improve scientific knowledge of their actions in this area.

This call for projects therefore aims to highlight the role of global philanthropy and the complementary function that philanthropic institutions play in the creation, structuring and distribution of one of the public goods on which their action is exercised, namely education. Education is understood here in the broad sense, from primary and secondary education to higher education and continuing education, and taking into account the various forms of knowledge transmission (face-to-face / distance).

The projects may address any or all the questions relating to the theme, including but not limited to issues of an ethical (equity, responsibility, neutrality), (geo)political, economic, cultural or geographic nature. By favoring a multidisciplinary approach in the social sciences, the projects submitted may in particular draw on various fields and scales of analysis (global approach to the phenomenon, philanthropy in one or more countries of the Global South, philanthropy in the North, among others) and highlight new observable trends. For example, it should be noted that university education is attracting more and more financial support, both from individuals, companies, and foundations, on a global scale, or that the development of online education and digital teaching platforms brings new perspectives and highlights renewed issues for private funds.

Two projects will be selected by theme.

Please note, projects and researchers already benefitting from the support of the FMSH cannot apply for this call. Projects selected in previous years cannot again benefit from this support.
