Between a complicated past and an uncertain future, how do we best live with ourselves?

To answer this question, the book explores the self-constructions of three types of Mandingo ritual specialists: donsow (hunters), basitigiw (fetishists) and jinatigiw (genie mistresses). It analyzes the relationship between these specialists and the entities - bush beings, thing-gods and urban genies - that their practice brings to light. It aims to capture, through this, what ritual does, how it does it, and thus to improve our understanding of this particular mode of engagement.
