Laurence Cox presents his recent book Why Social Movements Matter, written at the Collège d'études mondiales in the framework of the research program Mouvements sociaux à l’âge global.

This presentation offers a reflection on the status of the public space and the city that produces it and shows that at present it is built less as a common good of social and urban integration and more like a place of manifestations, resistances and citizen mobilizations who report disputes over control of spaces and conflicts for social, cultural, heritage and environmental rights.

Almagul Mussina

Almagul Mussina has graduated from Eurasian National University`s PhD program in sociology in 2013, since that time she has been employed as Lecturer at the Department of Sociology, which is in the Faculty of Social Science. She has experience in the implementation of international research projects in such programs as CARTI, RESET. She has been a visiting researcher at London University, Goldsmiths (2011) and at California University in Santa Barbara (2010).

The concept of "socio-political matrix" has been developed to understand the transformations of Latin American societies by overcoming the dichotomy between structure and actors. It is particularly useful for understanding contemporary social movements and their impact far beyond Latin America. The transition from the "state-national popular" matrix to the neoliberal matrix allows us to understand the major political developments as well as the successes, dead ends and challenges of contemporary social movements.
